ROBERT  CARLSON

I have been working in clay for a long time. More than 32 years of anything will have its ups and downs. Yet there aren't too many things that I can think of that are as satisfying as working with clay. While the lows are devastating, the highs are incredible.

My work, as with my life, has been through many changes. Both have had their successes and failures. There have been moments of pure bliss and other times that were so consumed with frustration and dread that I had no idea how I might continue. It is very difficult to explain all of the emotions that are at play when an artist is at work. Passion, thoughtfulness, angst, joy.... even boredom.

(Lets face it, sweeping the floor and grinding kiln shelves are just boring jobs...no way around it.)

I am very much at peace with my current work. It feels natural and unforced. The forms and images come to me freely. I am more at ease with my materials than ever before. My goal with this work is to allow the viewer to pause and reflect. To take time from their busy day to relax and empty out all of the distractions. To feel, rather than to think.  There are many things that I would change in my life if I could. Working with clay is not one of them.

My work is available in Galleries and Selected Art Shows, as well as through my studio. Gallery and commission inquiries are always welcome.
